The United States and Singapore have taken a significant step forward in strengthening their energy ties through a newly signed memorandum of understanding on civil nuclear cooperation. The agreement establishes a framework to foster collaboration between experts from government, industry, academic institutions, and national laboratories, aiming to uphold international standards of nuclear safety, security, and non-proliferation.
This pact not only enhances energy security but also aligns with shared climate goals by promoting zero-carbon baseload power options. U.S. Ambassador Jonathan Kaplan and Singapore’s Trade and Industry Permanent Secretary Beh Swan Gin signed the agreement, which builds on last year’s “123 Agreement.” Both nations hope to explore advanced nuclear technologies, such as small modular reactors, to address critical energy needs while supporting sustainable growth.
